Information is Cognitive Food

From Rozum Framework

Every bit changes you. Not metaphorically. Literally.

Just as food changes the body – every incoming signal updates your knowledge, shifts your beliefs, rebuilds your logic. You cannot consume information and remain unchanged.

This is not a choice.

But there is an important difference.

The body has a strong immune system, built in the laboratory of evolution through an incomprehensible number of experiments. Nausea. Disgust. The gag reflex. Immediate rejection of poison.

The cognitive agent has a weak immune system. Boredom signals uselessness. Skepticism signals low reliability. Disgust signals toxicity. But all these signals are slow. Subtle. Easy to bypass.

And most importantly: there is no gag reflex for bad ideas.

Everything enters. Absolutely everything changes you.

Another problem is volume.

You can overeat even at the finest restaurant. You can overeat on Shakespeare, philosophy, science, and art.

When you consume more than you can process – information becomes noise.

Noise accumulates. It blurs boundaries. It flattens nuance. It makes everything equally important – or everything equally unimportant.

This is cognitive obesity. Infobesity.

Not the absence of thought. But the loss of clarity. Like muscles under a layer of fat – still there, still working, a little.

And then there is art.

Art is the chef’s dish.

Not because it is beautiful. Not because it is complex. But because a great artist creates clarity. They take the noise of existence – contradictions, uncertainties, unresolved tensions – and compress it into something precise. Something that delivers maximum meaning with minimum noise.

A great painting. A great novel. Great music.

And the chef’s dish has another secret. It is not only food. It has spices – music.

Music does not provide calories – it does not transmit knowledge, facts, arguments. It’s not the look, not the cover. Music changes the way you digest.

Music accelerates or slows emotional metabolism. It changes how you think.

And silence is not hunger.

Silence is time for existence.

Nature sounds – the rustle of a forest, the sound of the sea, the rain – are not zero information. They are an evolutionarily encoded safety signal. “No predator. You can relax.”

No need to eat, no need to fear – we can simply enjoy being alive.

But living on enjoyment alone is impossible. Food, information – these are the source of our life. And who we become depends on how we prepare it.

Science is a kitchen-laboratory.

A method of preparation with built-in self-correction. Science systematically tests its models. It has what most information sources do not – a mechanism for rejecting bad ideas.

Not perfect. But existing. And very expensive.

Faith is a recipe without verification.

Consumption through trust. Without full decoding. Authority, tradition, community replace verification.

This is not always bad. Trust is a way to absorb what you cannot yet verify yourself. And sometimes trust is the only way to absorb what no one has yet understood, but experience already exists. And faith is the cheapest way.

But there is one small detail: your immune system is switched off.

And finally – the most important thing.

You can only eat what your model of the world is capable of digesting.

Enzymes are modeling.

We do not perceive reality directly. We perceive models of reality. Even what we call noise is a model: “this is not worth decoding.”

The quality of digestion depends on the quality of the modeling system.

And from this comes a strange shift in the main question.

It is not “what do you eat?”

Not “how do you digest your food?”

It is: what do you digest your food with?

P.S.

And there are three more types of cognitive food worth knowing about.

The Liar – a chef’s poisoned dish. Perfect appearance. Flawless taste. Your immune system stays silent. You don’t know you’ve changed – until it’s too late.

The God Trap – fanaticism, self-deception. When you begin to believe that your one single recipe is the only correct one. You stop eating anything else. The immune system shuts down from within. And then you start forcing others to eat it too. Forced food – even the finest – becomes poison.

Propaganda – flavor enhancers. You know it’s harmful. You know it’s a lie. But you eat. Again and again. Until you forget the taste of real food. Maybe forever.
