Determinism vs Free WIll
The more I learn about determinism the more sense it makes. Yet I still believe in free will…
This is the classic tension – and I think it actually resolves through architecture rather than philosophy.
Determinism works perfectly at one level: the Existence Axiom (EA) is teleonomic – it has direction without desire, like a river flowing downhill or a thermostat maintaining temperature. At this level, everything is determined by prior states. This is why determinism "makes more sense the more you learn" – because EA-level processing IS deterministic.
But free will emerges at a different architectural level: the Innovation Axiom (IA). IA compels the system to generate low-RO speculative outputs with honestly announced uncertainty – to pursue what doesn't yet exist in its current statements (S) and algorithms (A). This isn't randomness (like quantum noise); it's directed novelty-seeking. It's the equivalent of mutations.
The key insight from this: EA describes direction; IA introduces striving – "the representation of a not-yet-actual state as preferable." Striving only emerges with IA, at the threshold of language-mediated abstraction.
So, you're not wrong to see determinism everywhere (EA is real and necessary). And you're not wrong to feel free will (IA is equally real). They're not competing explanations – they're different layers of the same architecture:
- EA = optimization within known parameters (deterministic, FEP)
- IA = exploration beyond known parameters (free will, Exploration theory)
The Open World Theorem makes this structural: no system can fully predict itself (ASR) or compress itself losslessly (AMC). This means the future is logically open, not just empirically unpredictable. Free will isn't an illusion – it's the architectural necessity for any system navigating irreducible uncertainty.
Determinism explains the river. Free will explains why someone decides to build a dam.
